Did you know there's actually a test to spot a nostalgic British thirty something? Simply adopt a nasal, robotic voice and whisper three words into their car:"Robots in disguise". Watch as they stare, misty-eyed, into the distance as they recount tales of robots that turned into thins-cars, guns, fighter jets, trucks, cities and, er...a cassette player.

Forget the eye-watering leave-your-brain-at-the-door Michael Bay films, the original Transformers cartoon defined the mid-80s and, since it was itself an extended half-hour advert for a line of Hasbro toys, it inevitably spawned its own marketing-bed spreads, lunch boxes...and comic books. Marvel UK was already a successful British offshoot of the American giant, with home-grown titles such as Captain Britain and the Doctor Who magazine, when it launched the weekly Transformers tie-in comic book in 1984. Due to the limited US material, written by Bob Budiansky, it was spliced with short fill-in UK-originated stories. Tie-in comics were a common enough marketing trick and the British title was expected to last as long as such titles normally did- two years at best.

But what Marvel UK, and Transformers' chief writer Simon Furman, did was take the limited fill-in slots and generate original, creative stories that would eventually come to define the whole title. Enthralling characters and epic storylines were accompanied by varied but strong artwork from British talent such as Geoff Senior, Jeff Anderson, Will Simpson and Barry Kitson.
